PTC Analysis of YouTube Finds Explicit Content is One Click Away from Children

Popular Child-Friendly Terms Like “Hannah Montana” Give Kids Easy Access to Sexual Content and Explicit Language

 

In its first analysis of online media, the Parents Television Council™ found that extremely graphic content and harsh profanity are just a click away for kids entering seemingly innocent search terms on YouTube, the most popular destination for online video that has undertaken several policies to control inappropriate content. The PTC’s latest study, The “New” Tube, not only analyzes content in 280 of the most popular YouTube videos between March and October 2008 according to Compete Data Hub, but also takes into account the text commentary and advertisements that were available alongside the videos. more

PTC Singles Out Best and Worst TV Advertisers
Calls on Holiday Shoppers to Support Responsible Companies

 

The Parents Television Council™ released its annual ranking of the “Top Ten Best and Worst Advertisers.” The report ranked television advertisers from best to worst according to content in the prime time broadcast television programs they chose to underwrite. Advertisers that landed on the best list primarily sponsored family-friendly television shows, while those on the worst list often supported programs containing graphic sexual content, excessive violence or profanity. more


PTC Welcomes Passage of the Child Safe Viewing Act

The Child Safe Viewing Act will require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to explore new technology and review current blocking devices, such as the V-chip, that are designed to help parents monitor their kids’ media consumption. more

 


PTC Ranks the Broadcast TV Shows Children Watch Most

In its annual ranking of the 20 most popular prime time broadcast television shows among children ages 2-17 based on Nielsen Media Research data, the Parents Television Council™ found that reality and game shows continue to grow in popularity and are often the most family-friendly fare for children to watch. The PTC rated each of the Nielsen top 20 ranked shows with children ages 2-17 according to their suitability for that audience based on foul language, sexual content and violence, along with the overall themes of each program. more

PTC Finds Increase in Harsh Profanity on TV

Analysis Shows Increasing Permissiveness of Broadcast Networks in Airing F-word and S-word During Primetime

 

The Parents Television Council found that profanity during primetime broadcast television not only has increased since 1998, but that harsher profanity has quickly risen in prominence and pervasiveness.  More than a quarter of the expletives a child will hear on TV today will be the exact words or some form of the "f-word," the "s-word," or the "b-word" that air unbleeped or partially-bleeped on broadcast television. more

 


CBS Crosses Indecency Line with ‘Two and a Half Men’

The Parents Television Council™ is filing an indecency complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and urging its members and concerned citizens to do the same after a three minute long strip club scene featuring a lap dance aired on CBS’s “Two and a Half Men.” The episode at issue aired on Monday, October 20 at 9:00 p.m. in the Eastern and Pacific Time zones/8:00 p.m. in the Central and Mountain Time zones. more
